But today I’m revealing what it’s really like to declutter for 30 days straight!
Starting out, the challenge was easy, and getting rid of items seemed like no-brainers, but once week three came things started to become more difficult.
Turns out during the first half of the month it was easy to look around the house and grab what I knew I didn’t need anymore. It was fun, it was exciting, and made me feel productive.
Once the second half of the month came it was clear it was time to get down and dirty. I now had to search every drawer, cabinet, and closet to make sure I wasn’t missing things and meet the quota for the day. This in turn makes things not so much fun but a chore.
Even though the excitement when searching for things was gone, I still had pleasure when items were leaving the house. Or when my donating pile was growing, because I knew all those items I didn’t have to tent to, care for, clean, and make sure they were in their space anymore or ever again.
Decluttering to me is fun and sometimes I even crave it (mainly when things in my life are going out of control). But during this journey the question of how often should we declutter kept arising.
Now that this challenge is over I feel satisfied and think doing The 30-Day Minimalist Challenge once a year would be a great effective way to keep the house in order. But for me breaking it into two smaller sessions during the year could work better.
Perhaps two 15-day challenges or simply put, Spring and Fall cleaning.
The 30-Day Minimalist Challenge is an effective decluttering method that can be used when you feel like your possessions have gotten out of hand, you haven’t decluttered in more than a year or you simply want a refresher in life or any space.
