Keeping The Essentials
When the office gets out of control we know it’s time for a fresh start. So I plan on using this guide every year when cleaning. The first step would be to take everything out. EVERYTHING. Then vacuum or sweep the floors.
Next, put the main furniture back in and give them a good cleaning. Then go through all the items that accumulated in the office and only take out what’s on this list.
If there’s something not on this list then I need to evaluate if I really need it or not.
Now onto the list of goodies…..
“There’s a place for everything and everything has it’s place.”
Tools

The tools are the foundation of the home office. Without them, it’s kinda hard to get basic work done like writing something down with a pen and paper. But not only are they the MUST-HAVES they are the NICE TO HAVES. Like highlighters, a hole punch, and printer ink.
I have to add that keeping a small amount or even one of each thing is what I recommend. There’s no need to keep 3 scissors if you have one good quality pair that’s in its spot.
- Pens, pencils, and erasers
- Highlighters
- Markers
- Scissors
- Paper clips
- Binder clips
- Stapler, plus staples
- Tape
- Glue; stick and gun
- Pencil sharpener
- Hole punch
- Calculator
- Sticky notes
- Note pad
- Notebook
- Label maker
- Printer paper and ink
Organization

Organization is the backbone to keeping you sane in your home office. There are 3 categories that need organizing.
The papers; using the manila folders with a letter sorter is your fix. Paper trays are great for keeping your printer paper and loose papers that need to be stored in one place.
The tools; using a photo box storage is great to keep all your tools in. I recommend getting two.
The tiny things; Drawer sets are a must. There is nothing more annoying than trying to find a paper click, binder clamp, or thumbtack in a larger drawer.
- Manila folders
- Planner
- Photo Box Storage
- Magazine Holder
- Letter Sorter
- Paper Tray
- Small Drawer set for knick-knacks
Electronics

Electronics are what makes an office, well and office. So these items are no-brainers. But I thought I should still state them on this list.
- Desktop/ Laptop with charger
- Printer
- Flash drive
- Paper shredder
Furniture

These items pull your home office room together. Your desk is what makes your statement in the room and defines your interior style. The chair is your comfortable accent piece and OMG the printer stand. The printer stand or any place you have designated for the printer is what will elevate your home office.
Here’s your tip of the day, from your Interior Designer friend (me of course): Step one get the printer off the floor! Step two put it in a nice place like this stand that’s affordable and fits most interior styles.
- Desk
- Chair
- Printer Stand
- Book Shelf
